Charlotte

Charlotte handing out the Valentines for her Valentine's party.

Charlotte's hearing test on Friday was more positive. She gained another 20 db on her audiogram but is still 20 db from speech level. Yesterday's audiogram was a bit disappointing. The lower frequencies or lower sounds she heard on friday, she couldn't hear them yesterday. The higher frequencies she heard on friday were about the same yesterday too. But there wasn't improvement. She's still on steroids but we are starting to wean her off of them so it doesn't look too promising from here. The next step if she doesn't regain all of her hearing back is to look at a cochlear implant. The surgeon here in Utah is willing to do it because of the circumstances we are in. He is one of THE top 5 in the nation. So she would be in good hands. but there still is a bunch of things in question...her inner ear has abnormalities. Finding the actual nerve (which has been proven that it does exist) will be hard. There's a chance they might implant the wrong one which will cause facial paralysis. But we haven't talked with the surgeon about the precautions he would take in making sure he didn't hit it. The other questions are, will the implant work? Is her nerve to weak? If it fails, then she's lost all the hearing she has now. It's quite a risk. But, she won't be able to learn speech at this point anymore (unless a miracle happened and she got all of her hearing back)anyway. But do we risk the little hearing she has now? She just loves to listen to things...even if it's just a little of what she has left. It's a scary road in front of us. Breaks my heart. But Charlotte is handling it well. She's being a bit more clingy than usual. The second I leave the room, she comes running after me and stays by me. Fair enough, things are changing for her and she needs to feel comfort.

Truly a miracle.

I'm writing a lot of thoughts down for a journal entry. You can read everything if you want but I just wanted to write things down before I forget.

We went to the tow yard today to get some last things out of our Explorer. The car was officially labeled ‘totaled’ by our insurance company. It was surreal looking at the damage, and realizing how it could have turned out if we didn’t hit the truck where we did. The first impact was between the rear left corner of the semi and the left drivers side, right at the point where the door is hinged to the car (one of the strongest points on the frame of the vehicle). The impact crumpled the dashboard and of course left the door unable to open...leaving Wade stuck. If we had hit a few inches further down the door (the weakest point on the car) it would have caved in on Wade. He feels very lucky.

I know that the damage on the car doesn't look like much. But we had hit the semi while it was going forward at a fast speed. In addition, the impact was on the strongest point of the frame. But I think it's still pretty scary looking. Thank goodness all we had to deal with was some bruises and soreness. Wade hit his head and he didn't hurt after that. I seemed to be the only one that was really sore.

We were just north of Ogden and we hit the snow storm. The roads were pretty clear and it was just cloudy when we started out in SLC. But we got into a storm. We slowed down of course but kept going. I remember Wade saying that we should have stopped and stayed the night at Jean and George's but we were so far north that we decided to keep going. Then we saw an electronic road sign that said icy conditions, use caution. And literally...not a second later, we started losing control. Wade kept trying to get control of the car. He has had pretty good practice because they had to take a snow driving class on his mission (Canada Calgary mission) and all the practice in Canada and in Logan, etc. - he knew what he had to do. I trusted Wade that he was going to gain control and we'd just have a close call type of thing. Well, I remember seeing the corner of the truck coming right towards us. I felt in my heart that Wade was going to be hit directly. It seriously was heading straight towards him. I actually thought he was going to...well...die. I screamed out "WADE I LOVE YOU!!!!!". That's all I could do. I seriously thought it was going to be the last time I ever could tell him. Crazy thinking when you are almost about to hit a semi-truck. But when we were hit and he was okay, I couldn't believe it. The second hit was so loud because of the glass breaking. We then ended up perpendicular on the road. Wade had to back up out of the freeway so we wouldn't get hit again. Once we were off the road, I had to comfort Jack and Charlotte. Charlotte was okay when we started Curious George back up on the DVD player. Jack was really hard to comfort. And then I lost it. I was uncontrollably sobbing. Wade kept telling me that it was okay-that everyone was okay. I knew we were but my emotions...I just couldn't stop them. About 5 min. after we had the accident someone finally stopped over. They asked if they could call 9-11 for us or the cops. They were so kind. Wade found his phone on the floor of the car and ended up calling and at the same time I called my parents. We sat on the side of the road for a long time. About an hour. Jack was needing to be fed and comforted, Charlotte was still okay. I got Jack and held him in the front seat but after a few minutes Wade wanted him back in his carseat fearing that another car could hit us and Jack wouldn't be safe. So I put him back. Jack did not like that. Poor guy. It was hard waiting for the police to come. We thought the Wal-mart truck just kept driving but he actually stopped about a mile north. It was icy out and I'm sure it was really hard for him to stop. I felt bad that he had to deal with this. I wish I could tell him I'm sorry but we don't even know who he is. We didn't even meet him. Anyway, about 45 min. later another caring family stopped by to see if we were okay. They told about a really bad accident a few miles behind us which was why it was taking so long for them to get to us. And another car came about 5 min. after that to check on us. Eventually the police came and helped us out. My parents kept in contact with us the whole time and my Aunt Jean and Uncle George were ready to leave in a second to come get us. They were so wonderful to do that. The only reason why we decided not to was because we wanted to get home and we didn't want to risk them going through the canyon just to take us home. We kept trying to call people we knew...especially with 4 wheel drives. But no one was home because of Valentine's Day. Finally, we got a hold of our neighbors, Angie and Kevin Stott. Kevin is on the bishopric with Wade. We are so grateful to them and for them willing to come and get us without hesitating.

I think of the what ifs...we were following a caravan of cars and semi's for a long time. It's amazing to think that there wasn't any when we hit the semi. If there were...things would have been worse. And if we didn't hit the semi...we would have most definitely rolled. It was truly a miracle that we hit the semi. And it's an even bigger miracle that somehow the truck which was in direct line to hit Wade ended up hitting the strongest point of the car. Heavenly Father has blessed us and I'm so grateful.

Notice the crack in the dash?

Thank goodness the windshield or door window didn't shatter onto Wade. He would have been really cut. But he did end up finding glass in his mouth and in his shoes! Weird.
After we had settled, things were strewn about. We found the headlight nob (which is located on the left of the steering wheel) inside a treat bag on the console. We thought that was crazy. We started picking up stuff around us. We needed to get all the things we could take with us. Unfortunately, we could only find one of Charlotte's hearing aids. She had removed them a little bit before the accident because she couldn't hear out of them so she thought they were broken and gave them to us. So we had them on the console. Well, after the accident we looked EVERYWHERE for the right aid. We couldn't find it. Even after we got out of the car, Wade and I swept through the car to try and find and we just couldn't. I was devestated. Charlotte needed it because we didn't know when she would start hearing and didn't want her to go without it for a long time. We got home and brought in everything. I kept praying that we would find it and I kept thinking, where is it? It had to be in the car. But then I got to thinking about the knob in the treat bag! If that thing could somehow get in that bag then the hearing aid might be in some weird place. Then I got to thinking what was in front of my feet? I checked out the feeding pump bag...nothing...then I remembered the pharmacy bag with Charlotte's steroids. I looked in and saw a hershey kiss (from valentine's we were going to deliver) and then there was the hearing aid! I was SHOCKED. It just reassured me that Heavenly Father is going to help Charlotte get her hearing back. What a miracle.

Our bad day that just got worse...

Most of the family and close friends have already recieved this email that I'm now posting as a journal entry! The car in the picture doesn't look as "bad" as it looks in person. But the back window completely shattered behind the kids. thankfully it didn't shatter the windshield or wade's window. we would have been freezing waiting for the cops. but we are okay...shaken up, emotional, and extremely sore. But so grateful there wasn't another car behind the semi otherwise...well, i don't even wanna think about it. please pray for charlotte's hearing to return. she needs all the prayers right now. love you all...

So here are all of the details. When we put Charlotte's hearing aids in yesterday she wasn't able to hear us. We contacted her audiologist who wanted to see her right away because a sudden loss of hearing is a serious problem. Even though it was Saturday he opened up his office and did some testing: hearing aids working properly, no ear infection, but considerable hearing loss. The hearing loss was enough that Charlotte's hearing aids cannot amplify sound enough for her to hear anything. The audiologist contacted the ENT at the University of Utah Medical Center, who asked to see us as soon as possible that day. When we got to the U the ENT confirmed that there was a sudden hearing loss and explained that there are only theories why this happens, but no one is sure exactly why. The three prevailing theories are:1. The equivalent of a stroke in the ear- this is the suspected cause of sudden hearing loss in the elderly. He said if Charlotte was 80 and overweight with high cholesterol then this might be the cause.2. Some kind of viral infection that has attacked the ear only. There is no way to test for this, only to postulate that it has occurred.3. An auto-immune response by Charlotte that is for some reason attacking her ear. Also, no way to test for this, only to postulate that it has happened. The only treatment that they know for number 2 and 3 is the same: a 14 day dose of steroids. So, a steroid was prescribed for Charlotte. According to the ENT, the latest studies show these results: 1/3 of the patients that take the steroid get their hearing back at normal to near-normal levels. 1/3 get some hearing back. 1/3 get none of their hearing back. We have an appointment to see the ENT at the U again in three weeks. We were told that If her hearing hasn't returned by then it most likely will not. He said that on the bright side, most people in this situation don't see an ENT until 2 or 3 weeks after the loss occured, and by that time the steroids are useless.Needless to say we are very worried and pray for a return to normal. Charlotte is very confused at the moment because she cannot hear. She tries to listen to her toys that make sound and can't hear them. She bought us hearing aid batteries so we could change them for her, but that isn't the problem. She got upset last night when she couldn't hear when we sang songs as part of her normal going to bed routine. Here is the rest of the story:On the drive home we hit a patch of ice on the I-15, did a couple of 360s (I think) and collided with the back end of a semi that was in the other lane- twice. Miraculously none of us were hurt. Charlotte and Jack were crying but ok. The first impact was on drivers side, and the second on the drivers side at the back. Back window smashed in, windshield shattered, doors unable to open, steering mechanism broken, dashboard crumpled, and generally smashed up. The tow truck driver said it will be considered totalled for sure. We were only on the side of the road for 1 hour before the police came and 2 hours before a ride from a kind neighbour came to pick us up. Some how I got a $100 ticket for following too close- even though the truck I hit was in a different lane than us.We were very blessed to escape injury- truly a miracle. The officer took so long to get to us because there were several accidents in the area. The one behind us and another in the area involved cars that rolled- we are so lucky that didn't happen to us.Even with the crash we are glad we went so we could get Charlotte started on the steroids right away. We will keep you updated on her progress.

Happy #7 Anniversary to us!

The story of us.....short edition....
Wade and I met at BYU. He was taking pre-requisite classes for his Master's degree in Archaeology and I was taking my major classes in Archaeology. So we had about 5 classes together for Winter semester 2001. He came in late to our first class and had to take a spare seat somewhere in class (obviously ha ha). And looked around the classroom and saw me. So, he decided that he was going to sit next to me the next time. Well, I kind of thought he liked me after a few classes and I was uncomfortable about that. Not like I had anything against him but I didn't even know him! And I wasn't changing seats because that was my seat. Any relate to that? ha ha. He would try and talk to me and I would give him a short hello or other answer and go about my "business". That just really meant pretend to study or read the newspaper until class began. Anywho....there were about 6 or 8 of us that took these same 5 classes and we started to study together. So I got to know Wade...but as a friend. Then we had a required archaeology dig during Spring term 2001. And from there...it's history-sort of. Wade always teases me that I couldn't get away from. (Literally...we were stuck in Escalante) but we didn't start dating until we got home from our digs (he ended up going to Jordan, the country, halfway through the BYU dig) which was at the end of June, got engaged in September and married the following February.

Wade doesn't agree with me about this picture but I think it was one night out when we decided to get root beer floats at a restaurant. Wade paid for my treat and I didn't even realize it was only for me. I thought he paid for everyone. ha ha. A date maybe??? ha ha. I'm on the left in the white shirt.

So this was a camp scene on our dig. Dr. Janetski is holding the guitar. He performed a song called "Blue Eyes" and dedicated it to me from Wade. This was before anything happened between us...I was so embarassed. ha ha.

Our engagement photo.

Our anniversary:

Yesterday, February 9th, we celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary. How fast time flies. I still feel like it's only been a couple of years. Guess time flies when you're having fun! : ) It was a simple day but enjoyed each other and of course the kids company, too.
It was a bit traumatic at first. I accidentally syringed 2 oz of milk for Charlotte a bit too close to the previous dose. It made her throw up while at school. Although, she sort of wasn't acting herself after that. Kept throwing up. I was really worried because she wasn't sick and usually when she gets too much food...she recovers quite quickly. The day before she hit her head pretty hard on the staircase post. I mean really really hard. I was watching her to make sure she was okay all day on Sunday but she seemed fine. So I thought perhaps it was a post-concussive syndrome (same thing she got just before Jack was born) again. I was driving to see Wade after Charlotte's class because I couldn't get a hold of him due because he was teaching. Finally he rang by the time I was almost there. And at that point Charlotte was back to "herself". So I turned around and went home. I kept my eye on her, of course. The only thing that makes me wonder is she kept falling over and over again yesterday. She's got balance issues but the falling seemed to be more than usual. But she seemed okay. I still wonder if I did the wrong thing by not taking her in. But I don't want to be one of those people who see their child stub their toe and have to go into the dr. for fear of aids or something. You know? So yeah, that was the drama in the morning.
Anywho, I met Wade at school for a simple lunch and then after school we hung out. Then we went out to dinner at Olive Garden and had cake and ice-cream while we watched MacGyver. Aaaawww. So romantic! ; ) Wade gave me a cd and beautiful tulips (my favorite!) and I gave Wade MacGyver and something I made that told him 100 things that I love about him. Wade is the most incredible person. I am so grateful we have been married in the temple and will be together forever.

Jack stats

Jack had his 6 month well visit yesterday. He is 27 in. long (90th %) and 16lbs 15 oz (35th%). We're not sure why his weight is like that. I mean, he's gained weight but he's dropping on the chart. The dr. isn't too worried about it...yet but he still looks healthy. He's battling a cold now along with me and Charlotte but he is just as cute as ever. He got his shots too. poor guy!
We're starting solids more and more and he's enjoying the vegetables more than fruit right now. That's good! Loves rice cereal too. That's my boy!
